Obituary

Mrs. Josie Mae Fincher Peacock, wife of W.D. Peacock of Chauncey, died at their home Monday afternoon, following an extended illness. She was a native of Newton County, But had made her home here many years. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Fannie Piper Fincher and was 36 years old. Funeral services were conducted in the Chauncey Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon by Rev. T. L. Graham and Rev. O.A. Grant. Interment was in Chauncey Cemetery. Mrs. Peacock, in addition to her husband, is survived by four daughters; three sons, all of Chauncey. LifeSketch Josie Mae was born on May 5, 1905, by natural birth. Her parents were Henry S. Fincher and Fannie F. Piper. She grew up with four sisters and one brother. She was a very gently person. She never raised her voice to anyone. She like animals very much. She had some education. After their marriage in 1918, the couple lived in Mt. Ararat Community. William farmed with a mule. He would break up the land, plant the corn seed in the corners of three foot squares, and plow the middles with a middle buster both length and cross ways. He would continue to plow the corn until it was almost mature. From 1920 to 1932, with the birth of Angielene, Josie Mae had given birth to 8 children. In the summer of 1932, the family moved to a house outside of Chauncey. All of the children, except Junior, went to Chauncy High School. Although Josie Mae was only twenty-seven years old at the time of the birth of her last child, she had become an old woman. The hard life and 8 children has taken their toll. She was sick most of the rest of her life. Thus, the girls had to do most of the housekeeping. During this period, Josie mae managed to collect a dozen or so cats, a couple of hogs and three goats. She had the goats trained to her voice. Nobody could do anything with the goats but her. William continued to farm.
