GRAY: Cdr. George Albert Sheffield, Jr., USN retired, 81, went to be with Jesus, Thursday, August 08, 2013, after an extended illness. The family will greet friends Sunday, August 11, 2013, from 3:00 - 5:00pm at Bridges Funeral Home in Gray. Funeral services, with full military honors, will be held Monday, August 12, 2013, at 11:00am at Real Life Church in Macon with interment at Cedar Ridge Cemetery in Gray. Rev. Bo Turner and Rev. Ron Watson will officiate.
Cdr. Sheffield was born March 11, 1932, in Empire, Dodge County, Georgia, and had lived in Gray for the past twenty-eight years. He was the son of the late George A. Sheffield, Sr. and the late Susie Mae Law. Mr. Sheffield was a retired Naval officer with thirty-eight years of military service to his country who served as Commanding Officer on several ships. He was a veteran of the Korean War and Vietnam War. He also recently retired from a career operating his own lawn care service. Mr. Sheffield was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was also a devoted Christian who loved his Lord and Savior Jesus. In addition to teaching Bible classes, he has served as head greeter at Real Life Church, and maintained the church's lawn care for many years.
Mr. Sheffield is survived by his wife of thirty-eight years; son; daughter; daughter; son and daughter-in-law; and daughter and son-in-law; grandson; grandson and wife; granddaughter; grandson; granddaughter; and grandsons; great-grandchildren; sister; brother and sister-in-law; sister and brother-in-law; and many extended family relations; and his beloved Yorkies: Noah, Job and Eli.
Mr. Sheffield was preceded in death by sister: Dorothy Goolsby; sister and brother-in-law: Shelby and Gerald Parrish; step-father: Harry Burgamy; and brother-in-law: Edward Turner.
